Dr Javier Zarranz-Ventura obtained his Medical Degree at Universidad de Navarra (2000-2006), his Specialist Training in Ophthalmology at Clínica Universidad de Navarra (2007-2011) and Doctorate Degree (PhD) in Medicine at Universidad de Navarra (2008-2011), awarded as Cum Laude with European Mention. He underwent a Fellowship in Medical Retina & Uveitis at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, United Kingdom (2011-2012), and two fellowships in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust, Cheltenham, United Kingdom (2012-2013) and Bristol Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Bristol, United Kingdom (2013-2014).
He currently works as Vitreo-Retinal surgeon since May 2014 at the Institut Clínic d′Oftalmologia (ICOF), Hospital Clínic, and Hospital Universitari Sagrat Cor, Barcelona. His main clinical interest areas are Age-related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic eye disease and Vitreo-Retinal surgery, as well as retinal imaging techniques, in particular Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA). In August 2019, he also obtained a Master Degree for Medical Directors and Clínical Managers from the National Health School, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, UNED (2017-2019).
In the Clinical Research field, he has coordinated multicenter research projects in Age-related Macular Degeneration and Uveitis. He is a 3A Researcher at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) and co-director of several PhD projects in the area of Diabetic Retinopathy and Diabetic Macular Edema, Age-related Macular Degeneration and Vitreo-Retinal surgery at the University of Barcelona, the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of Navarra. He is also a Grant recipient from the Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias (FIS) and Fundació Marató TV3, La Marató 2015, Diabetis i Obesitat. He is a Researcher and Member of the Red Temática de Investigación en Ciencias de la Salud (RETICS 2012 & RETICS 2016) of the Spanish Ministry of Health.
He is author of >200 scientific communications, has given >120 invited lectures and has authored >50 scientific papers, >30 book chapters and 3 books. He has a H-index of 16, an i10-index of 20 and has >1000 citations. He was awarded with the Premio MSD award to the best PhD in Ophthalmology of the academic year in Spain (2011-2012). He has carried out training and research stays at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania, United States), Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami (Florida, United States), and the Academic Medical Center and the Netherlands Ophthalmic Research Institute (NORI) in Amsterdam (The Netherlands).
