Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Kowloon, Hong Kong, China
Prof. David C C Lam is a scientist and an engineer working to develop new tools, methods and indexes for clinical diagnoses. He and his teams developed new probes and monitors to characterize the biomechanical properties of the eye. He is leading the effort to develop a new corneal indentation device for ocular probing, and a silicon-free contact lens sensor system for ocular monitoring. He is working with ophthalmologists and optometrist to establish new physiological-biomechanics foundation underpinning ocular diseases. Working closely with clinical partners, he and his teams are developing new clinical-based specific Ocular Biomechanics diagnostic Indexes (OBIs) to improve glaucoma detection in early stage progression, and new drug delivery systems for the eye.
In addition to ocular and engineering work, he is working with neurologists to develop new endoluminal devices and treatments for strokes.
Prof. Lam obtained his doctoral degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He conducted experiments in porous solids and developed the mechanics theory for porous solids; conducted nano-mechanical experiments and developed new higher order elasticity theory for soft matters; developed embedded electronics passive packages in flexible substrates, and contributed to the understanding of fracture and reliability of thin films and packages. He had worked overseas, and is presently Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
