Dr. Wai-Ching Lam is Professor, Vice Chair of Education, Continuing Education Director, and former Residency Program Director (2001-2013) of the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, University of Toronto. He is also the Vitreo-retina Fellowship Director for the University Health Network/Sunnybrook Health Science Center. He has served as the lead program director and chief examiner of ophthalmology section for the Center for the Evaluation of Health Professionals Educated Abroad for Ontario, Canada. He received his MD degree from University of Manitoba, and completed ophthalmology residency and vitreo-retinal fellowship from McGill University.
Dr. Lam is a vitreo-retinal surgeon and educator who has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in Ophthalmology, Retina, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology…. etc. He has also authored several book chapters. He serves as the reviewer for many journals including: Ophthalmology, Retina, IOVS, …etc.
He won numerous teaching awards from both the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Ophthalmology. He was the 1st ophthalmologist received the Clinical Teaching Award from the Professional Association of Interns and Residents of Ontario in 1998. The 1st ophthalmologist received the Excellence in Postgraduate Medical Education Award from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto in 2006. He is also the recipient of the Ross Fleming Surgical Teaching Award in 2013 for recognition of the exemplary surgical teaching across all surgical specialties at the University Health Network which consists of the Toronto Western Hospital, Toronto General Hospital, and Prince Margaret Hospital.
His main clinical interests are in adult and pediatric vitreoretinal diseases. In addition, he also published in the field of medical education.
