Prof. Lam is the President of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) and the Editor-in-Chief of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology (APJO). He serves as the Secretary-General of the Academy of the Asia-Pacific Professors of Ophthalmology (AAPPO), Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retina Society (APVRS) and the Asia-Pacific Myopia Society (APMS). He is also a Fellow of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis (AOI), and a Council Member of the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) and the World Glaucoma Association (WGA).

Prof. Lam served as the Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences of the Chinese University of Hong Kong for over 13 years (1998-2011). He was also the Founding President of the Asia-Pacific Society of Eye Genetics (APSEG) (2002-8) and President and Organizing Committee Chairman of World Ophthalmology Congress (2008, Hong Kong). He was awardee of “ICO Golden Apple Award” (2011), “APAO Jose Rizal Medal” (2014), "APAO De Ocampo Lecture Award" (2003), and one of the “Top 100 Most Influential Ophthalmologists in the World in 2014” by The Ophthalmologist.
