Donald S. Fong is Director of the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Eye Monitoring Center. He’s Chief of Ophthalmology at Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center. In addition, he’s Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at UCLA School of Medicine.
A graduate of the Harvard School of School Public Health, Dr. Fong completed his residency and retina fellowships at Harvard Medical School / Mass Eye and Ear and Infirmary. He has also served as Chair of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Advisory Committee on Ophthalmic Drugs.
Dr. Fong’s research interest has focused on studying and implementing solutions for public health eye diseases. He’s investigated prevalence and risk factors of myopia development. He also studied the epidemiology of, clinical trials in and new screening approaches for diabetic retinopathy. His Eye Monitoring Center has pioneered population-based monitoring of plaquenil toxicity and early glaucoma.
Dr. Fong has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s (AAO) Senior Achievement and Secretariat Awards. He has been awarded Kaiser Permanente’s David Lawrence Patient Safety Award. More recently he won the US National Business Coalition on Health Innovation Award. He currently serves as Chair of the AAO’s Public Health Committee.
