Dr. Juan Gallo is Professor of Ophthalmology at Universidad Austral. He is also Principal Investigator at The National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and member of the Retina Section of the Department of Ophthalmology at Hospital Universitario Austral. He obtained his Medical Doctor Degree (MD) at National University of Rosario, Argentina in 1983 and then, a PhD at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm in 1992. Certified Ophthalmologist by Argentinean Ministry of Health in 1997.

Dr Gallo is former President of the Argentinean Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (AIVO), an international affiliated chapter of the Association for Research in Vision & Ophthalmology (ARVO). He served as Chair of the International Affiliated Chapters at ARVO and received the Certificate of Appreciation, ARVO, for his outstanding contributions to the Global Research Training Initiative. He was awarded ARVO Silver Fellow in 2015. Currently he is Member of the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports (Nature).

He has been intensively involved in medical treatment, education, research of ophthalmology and prevention of blindness for more than 25 years. He started the novel PhD and Residency Programme in Ophthalmology some years ago. This programme was thereafter implemented by other medical specialties. Dr Gallo has authored more than 40 papers published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Experimental Eye Research, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Acta Ophthalmologica, PlosOne, etc. He serves as reviewer in several international journals. He obtained two international patents (US 9,023,350) and (EP 2186529). His main research interests are retinal diseases and ocular angiogenesis.
