Research Interest: medical and surgical pathologies of the cornea, dry eye and ocular graft versus-host disease
Prof. Giuseppe Giannaccare is an Italian Ophthalmologist. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery with full marks and honors at the Campus Biomedico University of Rome. He completed the residency program in Ophthalmology at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna with full marks and honors. At the same University he carried out a PhD in Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences. His academic career started in 2017 at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna as Researcher.
Since 2019 he is Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro. He is the author of over 150 publications in English and dozens of book chapters. Invited speaker at over 100 national and international conferences. He has received numerous national and international awards, including the Scientific Research Award of the Italian Ophthalmological Society in 2018 (funding of € 25,000) and the Guinness World Records for having taken part as co-author at the most great scientific work in terms of collaborators (15,025).
From 2015 to 2017 he served as Directive Board Member for the Young Ophthalmologists at the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) and currently he is the Italian National Representative. Since 2019 he is Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology and Directive Board Member for the Italian Society of Corneal and Ocular Surface Transplantation (SITRAC). In 2020 he obtained the National Scientific Qualification for the role of Full Professor in Ophthalmology.
His main research areas concern medical and surgical pathologies of the cornea, dry eye and ocular graft versus-host disease. Pioneer of corneal neurotization thanks to the collaboration with the Maxillofacial Surgery Team of the San Paolo University Hospital in Milan. Since 2021 he is Member of the Workshop of the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society (TFOS) entitled "A Lifestyle Epidemic: Ocular Surface Disease".
