Chi-Chao Chan, is a Scientist Emerita of the National Eye Institute (NEI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA; and a Special Visiting Scientist and Honorary Director of Eye Research Institute, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (ZOC), Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), China.

Dr. Chan is an alumna of SYSU (M.D.), Johns Hopkins University (B.A. and M.D., Post-doc fellowship in Ophthalmic Pathology), Stanford University (Ophthalmology residency), and NEI/NIH (Post-doc fellowship in Ocular Immunology). While at NIH 33 years (1982-2015), she was the Head of Immunopathology Section and Chief of Histopathology Core at NEI. After working at NEI for 33 years, NEI hosted a Festschrift for her retirement in 2015. Her résumé includes 683 articles, 60 book chapters, and two textbooks. Her research focuses on molecular pathology and pathogenesis of uveitis, primary vitreoretinal lymphoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

Dr. Chan holds many honors and awards, including American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Senior Achievement Award, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Gold Fellow, NIH Director Award, International Uveitis Study Group (IUSG) Gold Medal, and Outstanding Achievement Award in Ophthalmology & Vision Research for Oversea Chinese from Chinese Ophthalmological Society (COS).

In March 2021, she was the only person featured in the NEI/NIH Celebrates Women’s History of the Month. She serves as a liaison between ophthalmic and medical researchers in China, USA, and the world. Dr. Chan is also the Vice Chairwoman of the Lingnan Foundation Trustee Board, an American philanthropy that grounds in the mission of promoting understanding between Chinese and Americans by supporting scholarly exchange, educational innovation and service to society; and contributes to the advancement of higher education in South China.
